Duality: new work by Sabrina Small

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 12, 2009 6pm-10pm

Duality is
Sabrina Small’s
response to a lifelong fascination with identical twins
and the curious balance between their individual personalities, yet strikingly similar physicalities.

Recently, the image of conjoined twins and freakishly mutated anthropomorphic figures started surfacing in Small’s work. These images reflect an increased interest in dueling personalities not only in twins, within the individual as well. We all house multiple personalities under the layer of flesh we’ve come to know as ourselves, and at times, they are at odds.

Duality also explores the connection we make with others in our more intimate relationships where we become “one”, so to speak, with the “other;” the seemingly superhuman strength it gives us; and the sense of loss we experience – like losing a twin or a limb - when it ends.
The new works are a combination of ink drawings on paper and hand
stitchings on felt. An exploration of the self and our dual natures, they
are an attempt at embracing the power of the “other” without being
swallowed whole by it.

Sabrina Small
resides in Sarasota, Florida and recently completed a
residency at the Hermatage Artist Retreat in Englewood, Florida.
Small was awarded the John Ringling Towers Individual Artist
Fellowship in 2008 and has exhibited extensively throughout Florida as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, Budapest, Hamburg, Berlin and China.

Friends of Grey,

About a year ago, I opened the doors at Grey with the hope of creating a place where the creative community, collectors and crepe and cocktail aficionados would converge and appreciate a community-centric melting pot of sight, sound and really comfortable seating. The support of the community, the living and breathing part of Grey, has been the greatest success I could hope for. Thank you for getting the word out, thank you for supporting the artists we exhibit and thank you for supporting Grey!

I hope you will join me and the Grey Staff in celebrating the Grey Gallery and Lounge 1st year Anniversary this Saturday, January 24th from 8pm to 2am. The celebration will include performances by the Yellow Hat Band, Vital, WD4D & DJ Riz and a special appearance (and photo-ops!) with Little Roy. I hope you can make it.

Warmly,

Erik

ETERNAL RETURN: Emily Ann Pothast

Emily Ann Pothast recently received some much deserved props on The Stranger's Slog and Joey Veltkamp's Best Of Blog..... Please check them out to read reviews about the talented artist/musician and her first ever solo show, currently on exhibit here at Grey.

Meanwhile, Grey is proud to host a performance by Midday Veil, Emily's band, on Sunday January 25th at 8pm.
"Midday Veil...specializes in ambient, eerie soundscapes that work well as mood music. ... If you ate some mushrooms and wanted to take a spiritual journey, this is the kind of thing you might put on the stereo. ...it would induce one hell of a trip."

WAYFARE: Paintings by JOSEPH ARNEGGER January 8 - March 11

RECEPTION: Thursday, January 8, 6pm - 10pm
Followed by DJs WD4D and Vital Experimental. Hip Hop. Breaks.

In his first exhibition on the west coast, Joseph Arnegger offers Seattle a collection of work he has been compiling over the last two years and conceptualizing over the last few decades. Arnegger’s influences often reference the numerous road trips up and down the east coast that he has journeyed since childhood. Wayfare’s visual imagery includes themes of travel, pop culture, road signs, topography, western icons and the female pin-up.
Every year Arnegger treks Interstates 75 and 95, exposing him to the visual stimuli offered by aging advertisements, ‘wish you were here’ postcards and dilapidated billboards that attempt to sell viewers on a better place to be. The inspiration these objects provide for Arnegger conjure a rare combination of nostalgia and anticipation in his paintings. Physical foundations of the work include found objects, multiple layers and resourced materials, which reference the neglected signage he regularly discovers on the road. Sunrises, sunsets, navigational maps and the ever-changing landscape of the open road have a direct impression on Arnegger’s pallet. Muted blues, the hint of open sky and the clouds they contain are clearly recognizable in Wayfare. The aircraft is also a notable muse, often representing going to and from and being in between.
