Duality: new work by Sabrina Small

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 12, 2009 6pm-10pm

Duality is
Sabrina Small’s
response to a lifelong fascination with identical twins
and the curious balance between their individual personalities, yet strikingly similar physicalities.

Recently, the image of conjoined twins and freakishly mutated anthropomorphic figures started surfacing in Small’s work. These images reflect an increased interest in dueling personalities not only in twins, within the individual as well. We all house multiple personalities under the layer of flesh we’ve come to know as ourselves, and at times, they are at odds.

Duality also explores the connection we make with others in our more intimate relationships where we become “one”, so to speak, with the “other;” the seemingly superhuman strength it gives us; and the sense of loss we experience – like losing a twin or a limb - when it ends.
The new works are a combination of ink drawings on paper and hand
stitchings on felt. An exploration of the self and our dual natures, they
are an attempt at embracing the power of the “other” without being
swallowed whole by it.

Sabrina Small
resides in Sarasota, Florida and recently completed a
residency at the Hermatage Artist Retreat in Englewood, Florida.
Small was awarded the John Ringling Towers Individual Artist
Fellowship in 2008 and has exhibited extensively throughout Florida as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, Budapest, Hamburg, Berlin and China.
